Women in Explosion: The female orgasm at the heart of a photo series

The orgasm is the most intimate emotion a human can experience, and yet there are still so many questions that need answering.

Is discussing the female orgasm a taboo? Has the sensation of the female orgasm ever been truly captured in art form? In art, is the orgasm beautiful or erotic? Is there a growing pressure on women, to guarantee this liberal explosion of elation? Can modern society still strive to control and limit the pleasure of women?

These questions are confidently and powerfully answered by Sabrina Kleinas, a young French/German photographer, based in Paris, through "Women in Explosion".

"Women in Explosion" is a thought-provoking exhibition and the result of two years work of intense passion, which involved Kleinas deeply immersing herself in her subject matter, to truly understand the female orgasm.

"Women in Explosion" captures women underwater, who develop fluid sensations in a surreal atmosphere.
8 visions of orgasm that allows Kleinas to simultaneously show us an energetic variety of ecstatic moments between death, metamorphosis and rebirth.

Rather than limiting the female sense of pleasure we should strive to create a platform in which women can fully unfold and blossom, rather than silencing her voices, or disrespecting their bodies, as all women deserve equality and freedom.

Through photography, Kleinas creates this platform, and gives a free voice for women to share their emotions, which is the major social role of contemporary art.

Tell me something about yourself.
I’m a 23 year old South African currently living out of my suitcase and exploring the world.

How old were you when you had sex for the first time and how long did it take till you had your first orgasm?
I was a student.

Define the orgasm in one sentence.
Orgasms can be so liberating and empowering, you forget where you are in a moment of time.

How significant is love?
Love to me is very closely related to sex, when I love someone sex is more than sex and therefore to me love is everything and the most significant.

How do you feel when you don’t orgasm?
It doesn’t bother me.

Does your partner support you with that? If so, what does he do?
Since I’m single I don’t have a partner.

What message would you like to share with all women?
Take your time to get to know your body, whatever you are feeling is natural and should be celebrated. Take pride in being a woman.

Interview

Tell me something about yourself.
I am 22 years old, was born in Austria and have now lived in Germany for three years. I’ve always been an outsider, but I’ve always managed to deal with it. In the last few years that hasn’t been the case though, so I’m trying to learn to value myself more again. I’ve been a model for three years, and this profession helps me strengthen my self-confidence. It’s always been my dream job.

How old were you when you had sex for the first time and how long did it take till you had your first orgasm?
Shortly before my 18th birthday I had my first time and 18 was also the first time I had an orgasm with my third partner.

Define the orgasm in one sentence.
An emotional, volcanic explosion.

How often do you treat yourself to this pleasure?
Three or four times a week.

How did your most breath taking orgasm feel? How did it happen and how long did it take? Where were you during this moment? Describe the scent of your partner. What were you wearing? How did you arouse him? What role did you play during the sexual game?
It happened this summer. The intense feeling of happiness overwhelmed me so much that I cried. It was a unique emotional experience! I have never felt so many things [feelings] at once. It happened in our bedroom, we were in bed and had already decided to have sex on that day. I was lying on him and had a vaginal orgasm. When I’m on top it happens very fast and I came after five minutes. He smelt like metal, since he works in a steel mill. He doesn’t use perfume. I find it manly when a man carries the scent of work with him. I was naked. I enjoy walking around the apartment naked and I like being naked in bed. I’m the type of person who likes being naked. If I wear underwear, it’s red. I like lace and transparency. On that day it was very spontaneous and we got going fairly quickly.

What does your partner have to do for you to have an orgasm?
If he licks me, he will always get me to orgasm. I like it when it takes twenty to thirty minutes.

How significant is love?
I connect sex with love.

How do you feel when you don’t orgasm?
Good. There have been more cases in which I have had an orgasm than in which I haven’t.

How do you deal with the situation of not having an orgasm?
I accept it.

Does your partner support you with that? If so, what does he do?
Yes, he supports me in every situation.

What else would you like to try?
I would like to sleep with a woman.

What message would you like to share with all women?
Don’t force things, let them come. Fully enjoy the moment and don’t wrack your brains. If you manage to switch off and loosen up, then your heart will naturally become stronger than your head. As soon as it comes, it’s beautiful!

Model: Sylvia Gobbel @Silver Agency (@sylvia_gobbel, @agencesilver)

Interview

Tell me something about yourself.
My name is Sylvia Gobbel and I am 57 years old. In the 80s I started working as a model. When I came to Paris I was fortunate enough to instantly start working for the French Vogue with Helmut Newton. Together we realized “The Big Nudes,” with four clothed and four naked women. Following that I worked with Helmut Newton, Peter Lindbergh, Oliviero Toscani and many more over the years. At the age of 23 I married a French man with whom I had two daughters, one 25 and the other 26. Today I’m divorced. I’ve been working as a model again since 2007, since there has been a demand for senior models, so women over the age of 40, 50, 60 or even 70. That’s how I became active again in Europe as a Top Model in the context of various fashion shows and shootings.

How old were you when you had sex for the first time and how long did it take till you had your first orgasm?
At 16. Only at the age 40 did I have my first orgasm. So far, I always thought my sex life had been normal. But when I was in my mid-thirties I experienced [sexual] frustration, however didn’t know what the cause of it was. When I got married I was sexually inexperienced, since I couldn’t try out different partners. I’m not talking about a one night stand, but about a long term relationship, in which one has time to adapt to their partner. With women it depends on the individual case. With some it works instantly, while others search longer and have to experiment. With my ex-husband and me it became a routine, and I couldn’t find any more joy in it, which frustrated me. With 40 I had my first experience with another man, which was one of the reasons for the divorce. For a happy and steady relationship, partners need to be tolerant, explore each other’s bodies, and understand one another perfectly in bed, so that everyone is satisfied. And if that is not the case, more experiences need to be gained. A new experience with a new partner can have positive effects on a relationship and bring new momentum into your sex life. For others, it would mean looking elsewhere for these experiences.

Define the orgasm in one sentence.
An explosion. For me it’s a wave, that steadily builds, until you can’t endure it anymore, and in that moment the explosion occurs.

How often do you treat yourself to this pleasure?
Almost every day. I think it’s healthy, to stay optimistic. For me, it’s like body hygiene.

How did your most breath taking orgasm feel? How did it happen and how long did it take? Where were you during this moment? Describe the scent of your partner. What were you wearing? How did you arouse him? What role did you play during the sexual game?
It wasn’t long ago, with my current partner. I came after thirty minutes. During foreplay I had an oral and clitoral orgasm and then a vaginal orgasm upon entry. It was in a very beautiful hotel near a harbor, with a stunning surrounding and a considerate, caring man. I had black, comfortable, elegant lace lingerie on. I didn’t have to do anything to arouse him. I think, he wanted me so much, that he would have came if I had been wearing a potato sack. I am rather passive in bed, even though many perceive me as being quiet dominant in life, but in bed I love being dominated. He had a very pleasant scent, with or without perfume.

What does your partner have to do for you to have an orgasm?
Foreplay is an indispensable prerequisite, since when it takes long and is good (Oral sex and fingering), then I have an unrivaled vaginal orgasm.

How significant is love?
I know that for many women the feeling of love or being in love play a large roll in having an orgasm. That is not the case for me. Maybe it’s my manly side. I am capable of separating sex and love, just like many men do. For me, sex is cerebral. My fantasy overtakes love, since I can have sexual intercourse without having feelings. Physical attraction is enough for me. It is more animalistic and sparks arousal within me. If I notice that a man can dominate me in bed, then I feel a special stimulation. In my everyday life I am a rather dominant, self- confidant person. That’s why it’s so exciting to have a man who dominates me in bed. It’s cerebral, since arousal comes from the brain. So sometimes it’s easier for me to have an orgasm with a man even if I don’t like him or I’m not in love with him. That way I can selfishly concentrate on my own desires without having to deal with his.

How do you feel when you don’t orgasm?
It’s not a problem for me, since we can try again half an hour later and it can last the whole night.

How do you deal with the situation of not having an orgasm?
I don’t have a problem with that.

Does your partner support you with that? If so, what does he do?
With my previous boyfriend, who was much younger than I was, I learned an astounding amount about my body. With him I learned how to orgasm and how he could get me to reach that point. I also learned that a man can be very sensitive. Maybe there are different degrees of femininity amongst men. He was a boxer, but on the inside he was very soft and sensitive. At first I expected brutish sex with him, but in the end he was the complete opposite, very tender.

What else would you like to try?
I have tried almost everything already. I would never have been able to talk so freely about sex ten or fifteen years ago. I have only been able to do so since a couple of years, when I really matured. Not only intellectually, but also sexually.

What message would you like to share with all women?
Ladies, don’t let yourselves be put down by men. Show solidarity, because we have to stick together. I’m not saying that all men are bad, but if all women would support each other, then we would have the power and not men. I am a real feminist.

Model: Nuri Son @Relatum Models (@sonnurinuri@relatummodels)

Interview

Tell me something about yourself.
My name is Nuri and I’m 27. I travel the world and my biggest dream is to become Top Model.

Define the orgasm in one sentence.
I imagine an orgasm being like an emotional explosion.

How significant is love?
Love is the most important part.

What message would you like to share with all women?
We create a frame, with which, from a female standpoint, we can free our infinite potential.

Model: Céline Karter (@sweetlikecayennepepper)

Interview

Tell me something about yourself.
I’m 30, shy, but at the same time I like people. I enjoy laughing and having fun. I used to be a model and now I’m an actress.

How old were you when you had sex for the first time and how long did it take till you had your first orgasm?
I was almost 20 and had my first orgasm when I was 20.

Define the orgasm in one sentence.
Spiritual.

How often do you treat yourself to this pleasure?
I could have it all the time and sometimes not at all for weeks.

How did your most breath taking orgasm feel? How did it happen and how long did it take? Where were you during this moment? Describe the scent of your partner. What were you wearing? How did you arouse him? What role did you play during the sexual game?
My first orgasm was my most magical one. We were in Martinique, in the garage of his house. The washing machine stood close to us. I sat on the washing machine, he stood opposite of me and kissed me while wildly touching me. That’s when I had my first clitoral orgasm. I came in five minutes. I had black, see through underwear on, sexy and modern. That’s my favorite. My most incredible orgasm was this year, alone. I was watching a video on guided meditation, to connect with my inner self. I was lying on my bed, listening to the voice of the professor/teacher, while looking at the pictures. After half an hour I had a powerful orgasm without touching myself. It was as if my body were being crushed by iron, my bed was completely soaked and I couldn’t breathe for a moment.

What does your partner have to do for you to have an orgasm?
He should tease my clitoris.

How significant is love?
Sex is something very special and profound. I have to be in love with my partner to have sexual intercourse with him.

How do you feel when you don’t orgasm?
I feel uncomfortable.

How do you deal with the situation of not having an orgasm?
It doesn’t really bother me, since it’s not the most important thing. To me, what’s more important is how I feel about my partner, as well as the feeling of satisfaction.

Does your partner support you with that? If so, what does he do?
I’m single, but my previous partner was selfish and didn’t support me. If I was in the mood for sex, he never wanted to [have sex] and called me slut. As soon as he wanted to [have sex], he expected me to be ready for him.

What else would you like to try?
Bondage.

What message would you like to share with all women?
Love yourself above all else and you will shine.

Model: Anna Agrelo @Curve Model Management (@anniediharvey@curvemodelmanagement)

Interview

Tell me something about yourself.
I ́m 25, I’m a girl with a strong personality and tend to often have an impulsive thought process. I usually say the first thing that pops into my head. However, I don’t think that it’s a weakness, since I’m also very altruistic. I have a small circle of friends, who are always there for me. At first glance I might not seem sociable, but I adapt well to any situation.

How old were you when you had sex for the first time and how long did it take till you had your first orgasm?
I had my first time a month after my 18th. I had my first orgasm with my second partner.

Define the orgasm in one sentence.
An electrical impulse that runs through my body into the tips of my fingers and makes my hair bristle, causing me to die for a few seconds.

How often do you treat yourself to this pleasure?
Every time I have sexual intercourse.

How did your most breath taking orgasm feel? How did it happen and how long did it take? Where were you during this moment? Describe the scent of your partner. What were you wearing? How did you arouse him? What role did you play during the sexual game?
When I reach an intensive orgasm, I feel my skin boil and my breath is taken away longer than usual. It happen during oral sex with my partner, I’m not quite sure when anymore. It was in his bed, cozy, safe and full of love. I kissed him on his neck and down his chest, while simultaneously petting him. I am passive and enjoy letting go, contradictory to how I am in my everyday life.

What does your partner have to do for you to have an orgasm?
I want to feel him inside of me, while he massages me.

How significant is love?
Everything.

How do you feel when you don’t orgasm?
I feel incomplete.

How do you deal with the situation of not having an orgasm?
It’s frustrating.

Does your partner support you with that? If so, what does he do?
Yes, he never lets me feel bad or unsatisfied.

What else would you like to try?
To add toys.

What message would you like to share with all women?
You need to hold on to your ideals to change the world.

Model: Luanna Pinheiro @Wilhelmina (@pinheiroluanna@wilhelmina)

Interview

Tell me something about yourself.
I’m 28 years old and have a very resilient personality. I firmly believe that everything around us exists out of love. I look at nature, especially trees, flowers and the ocean, to overcome difficult times.

How old were you when you had sex for the first time and how long did it take till you had your first orgasm?
I had sex for the first time when I was 21 and had my first orgasm alone at 18.

Define the orgasm in one sentence.
It’s as if my blood were boiling and I was close to exploding, like a firework.

How often do you treat yourself to this pleasure?
Pretty often.

How did your most breath taking orgasm feel? How did it happen and how long did it take? Where were you during this moment? Describe the scent of your partner. What were you wearing? How did you arouse him? What role did you play during the sexual game?
It was like a starry night, like when you press your eyes shut and see stars. It was a month ago in Hamburg. I had an orgasm after ten minutes. It wasn’t planned, it was unique! I was alone with my vibrator and had a clitoral orgasm. I like extravagant, sexy lingerie. I enjoy wearing leather lingerie, designed for bondage, fishnets and things with rope. I’m not really into that stuff, but I feel comfortable in these kinds of outfits. I enjoy creating an ambiance in which I insert a little bit of tension and cover myself up, while wearing extravagant lingerie just for him underneath. I like to put on music, since I like creating a base line for special things to come. The perfume I prefer is a scent similar to lemons and mints. I like it better when a man dominates me, since I find myself very demanding in life and prefer to be submissive in bed.

What does your partner have to do for you to have an orgasm?
Definitely a lot of foreplay. That is the most important part, at least 90% of it. Penetration is not as important to me.

How significant is love?
It’s necessary. I don’t experience any sexual desire if I can’t feel a connection. It’s possible to have sexual intercourse without love, but if you love someone and the feeling is mutual, then the sex is even better. And for me the profound nature of sex requires a connection between souls.

How do you feel when you don’t orgasm?
I am neither sad nor am I disappointed. It’s not something that always has to happen. When I have sex I try to get the most out of the experience, and if I don’t come then I try again and have another orgasm. Sometimes you come home from work after a bad day and it doesn’t work. That’s normal.

How do you deal with the situation of not having an orgasm?
In my case it usually has to do with stress. There’s always something going on in your head. You’re either stressed or have problems and can’t fully relax during sex. I usually try to think about something else and concentrate on what’s happening between me and my partner. I take the time to relax and go into nature to scoop out new energy. As soon as I come back I feel better and life can go on.

Does your partner support you with that? If so, what does he do?
Yes and he supports me a lot. He is very sympathetic and helps me a lot. We can openly talk about it.

What else would you like to try?
I’ve always wanted to try a threesome, even though I’m probably too jealous to try something like that out. I try to own someone with my desire, even though I know that other people don’t belong to me and are free to do whatever they want. So, I will try to tune down these desires and as soon as I manage to do so I would really like to try it out. My dream would be to have a threesome with two men. That would be awesome!

What message would you like to share with all women?
Ladies, get to know your bodies! It’s so important, because the beauty of the female body depends on the ability to confront any obstacle. Women complain about their period and cramps every month but don’t know how a menstrual cycle works or even how to have an orgasm, since they never touched themselves and never looked at what’s down there in the mirror. So here is my message: “Discover your body!” Touch everything that’s within your grasp, put your fingers here and there, look for what you like, what you like less, think about how you want to be touched, look at what works for you more and what works less and examine every piece. Let the man do the same with your body and you will be even happier. I’m telling you this because I didn’t know this either. I didn’t know my body that well and when I started exploring I found it so exciting to discover how everything works. I would learn something new every day. It’s a great help for both you and your partner. It’s important to have boundaries as well as exploring every aspect of your body, because it is your body and you have to live with it- so you should at least know how it works.

Model: It's me

Interview

Tell me something about yourself.
I am 26 years old and enjoy exploring beauty in its purest form.

How old were you when you had sex for the first time and how long did it take till you had your first orgasm?
I had sexual intercourse with 15 for the first time and my first orgasm with 22.

Define the orgasm in one sentence.
An orgasm is when every cell in my body is on fire.

How often do you treat yourself to this pleasure?
Almost every day.

How did your most breath taking orgasm feel? How did it happen and how long did it take? Where were you during this moment? Describe the scent of your partner. What were you wearing? How did you arouse him? What role did you play during the sexual game?
During my biggest orgasm I felt a euphoric pulsing sensation that flowed through my body. I came out of the bathroom, he stood next to the bed in black boxer shorts. His gaze never left me. I approached him and he told me to sit. He took of my heels and demanded that I lie down on the bed. Then he put elegant laced mitts, which were decorated with a ribbon, on my hands. With these ribbons he tied my wrists to the bed. Following that he blindfolded me with a black lace blindfold and stood over my body without touching me. I sensed his smoldering breath on me, sweat dripping along my body and I felt a well of pleasure build, which soaked my string. He barely grazed me before I had an orgasm. An uncontrollable electric current flowed through my body. I shivered like a mad person. In exactly that moment he took off my string and took me. My body continued shaking for a few minutes. We lost ourselves in each other...it was spiritual! It was in the hotel room “Blue Room” in Berlin. His scent rose to my head and it reminded me of a wild panther. I was wearing cream colored lace lingerie, with transparancy in some areas, as well as beige heels. My sexual vibrations spread through the room while we had no physical contact. I’m passive in bed, but sometimes l enjoy dominating.

What does your partner have to do for you to have an orgasm?
Everything and nothing.

How significant is love?
Love is my life’s elixir and sex is a part of it.

How do you feel when you don’t orgasm?
Good, since I know I’m going to do it again and have one or multiple orgasms.

How do you deal with the situation of not having an orgasm?
When I was younger I was victim of a sexual abuse. From one day to another my body and most of all my soul froze. I had to fight for years to free myself sexually. The harder I tried to have an orgasm, the more pressure I put on myself and the less success I had. Taking my time and having a caring, considerate partner was the solution to my problem.

Does your partner support you with that? If so, what does he do?
I am fortunate enough to have a very sensitive boyfriend by my side. He doesn’t feel satisfied if the pleasure isn’t shared between the two of us. He always recognizes what I need and does everything to ensure my wellbeing. If I ever had difficulties, he would support me.

What else would you like to try?
Massage candles

What message would you like to share with all women?
Believe in yourself and let your sexual desires run free. Be a Woman in Explosion!

Artist interviews

Marylin Perrod - Fashion Designer (@marymadelene)

Tell me something about yourself.
I am inhabited by love
Chance encounters are my treasure
Travels are my dreams
Family is my temple
The light my guide
My life consists of endless creating and imparting, with the conviction of my instincts.

Define the orgasm in one sentence.
The orgasm is a moment, standing in a timeless instant, in which one indulges in a physical release.

How significant is love?
Love is a condition, the vibrational field of the world. It’s a vibration that everyone experiences in a unique way, on different levels.
Love is the compass of life.

You created the designed dress, based on the personality of every top model. What was your creative power?
My idea was thoughtful, a mediation for every girl, to capture the volume of their bodies, to become the way they move and to simply insert myself into their existence. That was very intoxicating. The creative dynamic was purely instinctive while at the same time respecting Sabrina’s wishes.

What are your personal thoughts on the subject?
A poem by Paul Éluard!

Like lightning,
Throw your hands
On a face without background
Know what is not your image
Doubt yourself
Know the seed in your heart
This sprout will take fire
That will burn your eyes
Enlighten you.

Stan Rey-grange - Lighting Director (@stanreygrange)

Tell me something about yourself.
I am a really sensitive person and have always been someone who felt a lot. When I discovered my passion for light it was a very special moment, since it was something that reflected my strong feelings. It was a way to make tangible things seem entirely abstract. Light and I have become pretty good friends. For me, the light is similar to a wave of emotions. There are really abstract, invisible elements that we don’t see and in the end we create the perfect light. I can see this light before it becomes real. Just like the feelings you have under your skin before they appear on the surface.

Define the orgasm in one sentence.
The summit of pleasure.

How significant is love?
For me, the orgasm is something that is very deep and in order to reach it there needs to be a mutual exchange of emotions. I believe that this is the most exciting thing about sex.

You were the one who designed the light for Sabrina’s project. What was your vision?
I was very fortunate to be a part of this very intimate, beautiful project. The director is very authentic. The theme has very deep roots and is one that affects me profoundly. Women’s rights and the freedom that comes with it have always been things that have deeply interested me. I am very proud of all the women who are close to me and I think that we beautifully complement each other. In today’s world women are not always respected. I believe that everyone is free to live their desires and experience their sexuality to the fullest.

My vision was about pleasure, something bright that comes from the inside. The underwater environment was perfect for it. I could feel the liquid exchange and the fluid sensations. Due to the deep nature of the subject, the environment is quiet dark, like the center of the universe. I wanted to create a sort of halo around the girls, with glowing effects, to feel the vibrations.
When I have an orgasm, I feel intense vibrations. I wanted to recreate them with light.

What is your personal statement?
If we would always think about sex as giving and sharing instead of just having, we would have the best orgasms.

Oliver M. Fall - Fashion Stylist (@oliver.m.fall)

Tell me something about yourself.
My Name is Oliver M. Fall. I’ve been working in the fashion industry and in visual merchandising for the past 14 years. I am very proud to be part of this project! If I had to describe my personality, then I would describe myself as being a ray of sunshine in the eye of a storm.

Define the orgasm in one sentence.
I can vividly remember my first orgasm. However, I’m not quite sure how to describe how I felt, since it was very long ago. Both my previous and my current self would describe the orgasm in one word...explosion!

What value does love have?
I can clearly separate sex and love and I feel a lot of satisfaction in both cases! But for me love is important, so I can let myself go. Where there are no taboos, there is no uncertainty, just free love!

What was your vision regarding the dresses for the models?
Mine? I would say our vision! Sabrina inspired me right from the start with her project. Our vision was to underline the personality of each model with designer clothing, without exposing their womanhood. We envisioned pretty lingerie with a touch of glamour, harness influences and flowing fabrics, to keep their sexual auras in focus. Thanks to the fabulous Marylin Perrod, our expectations were more than met.

What is your personal opinion on the topic?
Not only women are feminists. We should all be feminists, since we’re in the year 2018 and there still is a divide between women and their sexual freedom and that is something we should fight against. Let us get rid of this barrier!

Laura Kleinas - Singer I Voice-over (@laurakleinas)

Tell me something about yourself.
I’m 23 and I’ve loved singing ever since I was a little girl. My hobbies are singing and to make voiceover recordings.

Define the orgasm in one sentence.
It’s an indescribable feeling.

How significant is love?
Love strengthens the orgasm. Without love, I feel less and I also find it less comfortable.

You sang the song “Women in Explosion” What was your creative drive?
It’s a very beautiful subject. Sabrina managed to express the orgasm in a creative way. Society tends to depict women as sex objects, which I find hurtful and vulgar. Sabrina cultivated the orgasm and the freedom of a woman in a very artistic way in her photos. The pictures are very soft and sensual and this sensuality was what I wanted to mirror in my song.

What is your personal thought on the topic?
Women, breathe your dreams like air.
